En una playa remota al sur de la isla de Lantau en Hong Kong, una manada de búfalos salvajes vive feliz o triste.

El búfalo de agua (Bubalus bubalis) es un animal de pezuña hendida de tamaño considerable que se cría comúnmente en Asia. Los búfalos salvajes mencionados en este artículo son grupos de búfalos domesticados en proceso de reconstrucción.

Cuando todavía había agricultura en Hong Kong, los granjeros locales usaban ganado y búfalos de agua para ayudar a arar la tierra y cultivar arroz. La agricultura y las áreas rurales también han cambiado drásticamente a medida que la economía pasa a la industria y las finanzas. En la década de 1970, se abandonaron los arrozales, se perdió la población rural y se abandonó mucho ganado y quedó en un estado salvaje de autosuficiencia.
Hay alrededor de 1.100 cabezas de ganado y 120 búfalos de agua en Hong Kong, distribuidos en la isla de Lantau, Sai Kung y los Nuevos Territorios.
